Reading and Assessing Social Impact Assessment for Land Use Planners

BOOK NOW

Synopsis

This half‑day course gives planners the skills to interpret an SIA, evaluate its findings, and identify when further information is needed. Designed for council staff working with renewable energy proponents preparing SIAs and Community Benefit Agreements under the Planning Act 2016, the course requires no prior SIA experience.

Content covers the Queensland SIA Guideline, its role within the Planning Act, the difference between risk and social significance, engagement versus social research for mitigation, and common issues identified in recent council reviews.

Course Topics

  • explain the SIA Guideline and its links to community benefit agreements;
  • how to read and review a SIA;
  • test whether impact ratings are supported by the baseline and committed measures; and
  • distinguish project engagement from social research that co-designs mitigations.
