Thanks to funding provided by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and the tireless efforts of the LGAQ’s advocacy, Queensland’s councils will now benefit from the re‑introduction of the LGA51020 Diploma of Local Government (Planning), Peak Services Training (RTO 30003) nationally recognised qualification designed to build capability, consistency, and confidence across the state’s planning workforce;
Our Planning Diploma has returned with renewed relevance, aligning with contemporary planning practices, legislative frameworks, and the evolving expectations placed on councils. Its re‑emergence comes at a critical time, as local governments navigate increasing development pressures, housing supply challenges, and the need for robust, well‑informed planning decisions. This nationally recognised qualification has been purpose‑designed for Queensland local government, supporting officers involved in planning, development assessment, community engagement, and regulatory functions. With increasing development pressures, housing supply challenges, and a growing need for consistent, defensible planning decisions, our new Diploma provides a structured pathway for councils to build internal expertise and reduce reliance on external consultants.
Why this Diploma matters to councils
Local government planners are at the frontline of shaping Queensland’s communities. From development assessment to strategic land‑use planning, the sector requires professionals who understand both the technical and regulatory landscape as well as the broader social, economic, and environmental context. Our new Diploma supports councils by building workforce capability, supporting consistent decision-making, and enhancing recruitment and retention by offering to upskill your employees.
The 2026 Diploma will be delivered across three structured training blocks (6.5 days) featuring the course theory. Each training block will be facilitated by experienced industry practitioners with deep local government knowledge. Participants will develop capability across planning legislation, development assessment, community consultation, risk management, workplace safety, communication, and project delivery.
Program Price: $5,990 per person.
No GST applies to accredited courses.
